Legislative Principles

Strengthen public education:

With 145,000 more children entering school in the next 10 years, now is the time to develop a long-term funding plan so our children can face the future with confidence.

  • Reduce class sizes to increase individual attention for students.
  • Make teacher salaries attractive and competitive so that we can recruit and retain the best educators in our classroom.
  • Provide resources for early reading and improved literacy.

Improve access and affordability of health care:

With health care costs increasing at a staggering rate, we need to make certain that all people have health care, not just the rich and better off.

  • Counter federal cuts in Medicaid and promote state funding for essential care.
  • Reduce prescription drug costs for Medicaid recipients, while saving the state hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • Expand education programs about obesity risk and prevention, especially among our school children.
  • Support legislation that helps prevent high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.

Improve our economy and and job stability:

Utah will grow its own businesses and attract and retain new companies by securing a well-prepared workforce.

  • Fund expected growth in higher education.
  • Provide additional funding for USTAR.
  • Maintain affordable tuition at technical schools, community colleges and universities.
  • Invest in renewable energy sources.

Restore public confidence by reforming government processes:

Apathy and frustration of voters and non-voters can be reversed by flooding government with sunshine.

  • Diminish partisan control of 2011 redistricting.
  • Ban gifts to legislators.
  • Require detailed expense reporting by lobbyists.
  • Institute penalties for violation of reporting requirements for candidates, elected officials, and lobbyists.
